DevRel Tip of the Week
This week we’ll learn about the different types of documentation. The four main types of documentation are tutorials, how-to-guides, explanations, and reference.
Let’s take them one by one and illustrate each one using examples from cooking and food😋
Tutorials: allow a newcomer to get started. It’s like teaching a kid how to cook. What you teach the kid to cook is not that important, but rather that the kid finds cooking enjoyable, gains confidence, and wants to do it again.
How-to-guides: show you how to solve a specific problem. You can think about how-to-guides like following a recipe to cook a particular dish. For example, you must follow specific steps in a given order to make pizza.
Explanation: helps understand how different things go together. Going back to our food analogy, here you might have a book that discusses cooking in the context of human health.
Reference: used to describe the system. You can find information about a particular ingredient (potential issues, properties, behavior, chemical constituents, etc.).
